How Jackpots Work

Your complete guide to Kenyan sports jackpots.

A sports jackpot is a prediction game where you must correctly guess the outcome of a specific number of football matches to win a massive prize pool. While the concept sounds simple, the mechanics—bonus tiers, voids, double chance, and rollovers—can be confusing. This guide breaks down exactly how the SportPesa Mega, SportPesa Midweek, and Betika Midweek jackpots operate.

The Basics: Pari-Mutuel vs. Fixed Odds

Unlike standard sports betting where the bookmaker sets fixed odds, jackpots are usually pari-mutuel. This means all the money paid by players (the stake) goes into a pool. After the operator takes their margin, the remaining pool is distributed among the winners.

If nobody predicts all the games correctly, the prize is not paid out. Instead, it rolls over to the next week, combining with the new week's pool to create a life-changing sum. This is why the Mega Jackpot prize sometimes exceeds KES 200 million.

The Three Major Kenyan Jackpots

While the mechanics are similar, the three major jackpots differ in size, difficulty, and bonus structures.

How the Bonus Tiers Work

You don't need to get every single game right to win money. All three major jackpots have a "bonus tier" structure. If you miss the full jackpot but hit a certain number of correct games, you win a share of a separate, smaller bonus pool.

SportPesa Mega Bonus

If you get 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16 games correct, you win a bonus. The payout depends on how many other people hit that exact same score. Getting 16 correct usually pays much more than getting 12 correct.

SportPesa Midweek Bonus

If you get 10, 11, or 12 games correct, you win a bonus. Because there are fewer games (13), the bonus threshold is lower (10).

Betika Midweek Bonus

If you get 12, 13, or 14 games correct, you win a bonus. Betika's structure closely mirrors the SportPesa Mega, just with 15 games instead of 17.

What Happens If a Match is Postponed? (Voids)

This is the most common point of confusion for new players. If a match is postponed, abandoned, or cancelled—and is not played within the operator's designated time frame (usually 24 hours)—it is declared a Void (V).

A void match is essentially deleted from your slip. You do not lose the jackpot if a match is void. Instead, your active number of games is reduced. For example, if the Mega Jackpot has 17 games, but one match is postponed, you now need to get all 16 active games correct to win the full jackpot.

You can see how voids are handled in real-time on our Slip Checker page, which automatically ignores void games when grading your slip.

Double Chance & Triples

A standard jackpot requires you to pick just one outcome per game (1, X, or 2). However, you can increase your chances by using "Double Chance" (picking two outcomes, like 1X) or "Triple Chance" (picking all three outcomes).

The catch? Every double chance you add doubles the cost of your slip. Every triple chance triples the cost. If you use double chance on all 17 games of the Mega Jackpot, your slip will cost KES 131,072 (2^17 × 99). You can experiment with combinations using our Mega Jackpot Calculator.

The Rollover: How Prizes Grow

When nobody hits the full jackpot, the pool rolls over. This is why the Mega Jackpot often sits at KES 100 million or more, even though the weekly entries might only generate a fraction of that.

Historically, this has led to record-breaking payouts in Kenya. In August 2025, Boniface Kamau won a record KES 424.6 million on the SportPesa Mega Jackpot after the prize had rolled over multiple times. You can read about this and other historic wins on our Mega Jackpot Results page.

3 Rules for Playing Smarter

1. Never Spend More Than You Can Afford

Jackpots are high-variance. The statistical probability of winning a 17-game jackpot is roughly 1 in 129 million. Treat it as entertainment, not an investment. Play with a fixed budget.

2. Understand the Payout Structure

Before you play, check what the bonus tiers are paying. If the 12/17 tier is only paying KES 1,000, but your slip costs KES 3,168, the expected value is low. Our Bonus Calculators can help you estimate potential returns.

3. Use Bankers Wisely

Instead of guessing all 17 games, identify 3 or 4 games where the favourite is overwhelmingly likely to win (our Banker picks). Anchor your slip around them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I win the jackpot if one match is postponed?

Yes. If a match is postponed (void), it is usually assigned a result of 'V' and removed from your active selections. If the remaining active matches are all correct, you still win the jackpot. Your total effective games are just reduced by the number of voids.

What is double chance in a jackpot?

Double chance allows you to cover two possible outcomes in a single game (e.g., Home Win or Draw). It costs more to play but significantly increases your chances of keeping the slip alive.

How much does a jackpot slip cost?

The base cost depends on the operator. SportPesa Mega is KES 99, SportPesa Midweek is KES 99, and Betika Midweek is KES 99. If you use double chance or triple chance selections, the cost multiplies based on the number of combinations.

Why does the jackpot prize change every week?

Jackpots are pari-mutuel. A portion of every betslip sold is added to the prize pool. If nobody wins the full jackpot, the prize rolls over and grows larger for the next draw.
